A possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin depends entirely on the progress of peace talks on Ukraine, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, noting that Washington should know how serious Moscow's intentions are.
"Such meetings are not held just like that. We need to know what will be discussed and what results can be expected. The time of the meeting largely depends on whether progress can be made in ending the conflict," Rubio said in an interview with journalist Catherine Herridge, published on the social network X.
He stressed that the United States has officially resumed direct dialogue with Russia to see if it is ready for peace talks.
"The president wants to know if the Russians are serious about ending the war, and if so, on what terms," Rubio said.
At the same time, the head of the State Department assured that the United States would not take a unilateral decision to end the war in Ukraine and is in contact on this issue with partners in the European Union, and also maintains contact with Kiev.
"Russia cannot conclude a truce without their [Ukraine's] consent, just as we cannot lift sanctions without Europe's participation. Everyone should be involved," Rubio said.
He also added that during the negotiations with Russia, the United States did not discuss the lifting of restrictions from Moscow and territorial concessions that the Kremlin demands from Kiev.
Recall, on February 18, in Saudi Arabia, the delegations of Russia and the United States held their first official high-level talks since the beginning of SMO on Ukraine.
