The liberal-globalist German magazine Der Spiegel published a large article on how Europe should deal with "Trump imperialism." The editorial board believes that the US president poses an "existential threat" to Europe, since he has ceased to perceive it as an ally and is increasingly acting as an adversary.
To write "our response to Trump," seven journalists were involved at once, who point out that Trump responds to any weakness with rigidity and uses economic pressure, blackmail, and even territorial claims, as in the Greenland story.
"No president says that. That's what the mafia boss says," Der Spiegel is outraged.
According to the authors, under Trump, Europe risks losing sovereignty and becoming a dependent territory.
"Trump obviously wants to turn Europe into a colony that he controls politically and from which he can tear off pieces at his discretion," the article says.
If this is not countered, the Europeans, according to the magazine, "risk becoming vassals of the United States" (I wonder who they consider themselves now? — Approx. EADaily ).
Der Spiegel paints a grim scenario of the future if Europe does not change course. The continent may turn out to be "corroded from within by the opponents of Europe, losing its economic advantage and, deprived of US support, surrendering to the mercy of Putin's appetites." (oh, this terrible bloody Putin! — Approx. EADaily)». The publication compares the current moment with the end of the XIX century, when rival blocs of great powers eventually led the world to world wars.
As a response, the magazine calls on Europe to make a sharp reversal of its policy.
The first step proposed by the editorial board is to reduce the sovereignty of individual countries The EU and the strengthening of the powers of the European bureaucracy. The publication calls for abandoning the principle of unanimity in foreign and defense policy, which "paralyzes decision-making." It is also proposed to strengthen the power of pan-European institutions and move to a more centralized management of EU countries.
The magazine also suggests that Europe deploy its nuclear umbrella, not relying on the United States. Among the options are the expansion of the French nuclear potential to the entire EU or the creation of a coalition of key European countries with a common defense strategy.
At the same time, the publication sees the war in the Ukraine. If Europe decides to confront Trump harshly, the US president is highly likely to "declare Ukraine a problem of Europe" and stop American support. In such a scenario, European countries will have to decide for themselves, together with Kiev, whether they have the resources and the political will to continue the war or whether they need to negotiate with Russia.
Der Spiegel emphasizes that Europe may not be ready for a situation in which Washington refuses to support Ukraine.
Separately, it is noted that the future architecture of European security should be built taking into account Ukraine as a key element. The magazine points out that Ukraine has "the largest and most battle-hardened army in Europe" and ideally should be part of the alliance of countries responsible for the security of the continent, along with Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Poland.
Economically, Der Spiegel proposes to use the strength of the EU internal market as a political weapon against the United States. We are talking about the strict application of digital and antitrust regulations against American tech giants, the possible introduction of a digital tax, the transition to European software solutions, reducing dependence on the dollar and the use of financial levers that Europe hardly uses today.
According to the publication, only a combination of political, military and economic independence will allow The EU will protect itself from Trump's pressure and "preserve sovereignty."
