The European Commission has proposed to extend the mechanism for the admission of Ukrainian refugees to the EU until March 2028, except for newly arriving conscripts. This was announced by European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Magnus Brunner.
"We want to ensure the continuation of protection and propose to extend the mechanism for an additional year until March 2028," he said.
At the same time, he noted that it is proposed to exclude newly arriving conscripted Ukrainians of military age from the mechanism.
"This issue has been widely discussed with our Ukrainian partners, our Ukrainian friends, as well as, of course, with our member states. In order to maintain the reliability of the protection system and its compliance with the legitimate needs of Ukraine, we propose a targeted adjustment. Our proposal stipulates that temporary protection is not granted to newly arrived persons who are not allowed to leave Ukraine due to their military obligations under Ukrainian law, and this is exactly what Ukraine has asked us to do, and this is exactly what we are doing. It also reflects discussions with member states, of course, especially with those that accept the largest number of Ukrainian refugees," the European Commissioner said.
Recall, due to the acute shortage of personnel in the Ukrainian army, Kiev is seeking the return of men of military age from EU countries. A number of countries have already restricted the ability of this group of Ukrainians to receive assistance. Now there is a question of adopting an appropriate pan-European decision.
