The Central Election Commission of Armenia unexpectedly accepted an application for holding a referendum on a civil initiative. Thus, the proposal of Russian President Vladimir Putin on the expression of the will of the people on Armenia's accession to the EU can be put into practice.

Contrary to fears, today the CEC of the republic accepted the application and provided an official document. In accordance with the current Armenian legislation, a special session of the CEC is to be held within a ten-day period, which will approve the official campaign to collect 300 thousand signatures. If the initiators manage to collect the necessary amount, the state will be obliged to immediately submit the issue to a national referendum.

Recall that at a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on April 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin strongly recommended that he hold a referendum and decide on the choice between the EAEU and the EU.

As EADaily reported, on July 4, an application for holding a referendum was submitted to the CEC of Armenia. 50 participants of the civic initiative called the Eurasian Alliance, formed by representatives of the Alliance party of former MP Tigran Urikhanyan, notarized the draft law and submitted it to the CEC of Armenia for registration.

The aim of the project is to neutralize and prevent economic and social risks and crises that may arise as a result of the law "On the beginning of the process of Armenia's Accession to the European Union" adopted on March 26, 2025 due to the incompatibility of customs regulations of the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

The project proposes to fix in The Constitution prohibits the signing by the Republic of Armenia of such interstate agreements that directly contradict other interstate agreements already signed by Armenia and in force.

"To supplement Article 5 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, adopted on December 6, 2015, with paragraph 4 with the following content: "Laws and international treaties (new) that directly contradict laws and international treaties signed, ratified and valid for the Republic of Armenia cannot be signed and ratified," the text of the bill says.
