The Helsinki District Court has issued a decision to arrest one of the crew members of the dry cargo ship Fitburg, who was detained by the Finnish authorities on suspicion of breaking a telecommunications cable in the Baltic Sea.
"A member of the crew of the Fitburg cargo ship, suspected of breaking the cable, was detained today at the Helsinki District Court," Yle reports with reference to investigator Kimmo Huhta-aho.
According to him, the detainee is suspected of aggravated interference in telecommunications, vandalism and attempted vandalism.
"The ship's crew consists of only 14 people. They are citizens of Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan," the newspaper writes.
Earlier, Yle reported that the police are requesting the arrest of an Azerbaijani citizen. An exit ban has been imposed on a Russian citizen.
As EADaily reported, on December 31, the Finnish authorities detained the Fitburg vessel, which was sailing from St. Petersburg to Haifa and allegedly dropped an anchor that could damage the Elisa telecommunications cable. Now the ship is in the port of Kantvik in Kirkkonummi.
