Users of Chinese social networks believe that the US operation can become a model for solving the Taiwan issue. This is reported by Bloomberg.
The US operation to capture Maduro soared to the top of Chinese Weibo on Saturday — this topic has gained about 440 million views on the platform. Many users compared the fate of the South American country with Taiwan.
"I suggest using the same method to return Taiwan in the future," commented one of the users of the post, which has gained more than 700 likes. "If the US doesn't take international law seriously, why should it matter to us?" said another.
"The lightning raid of the American imperialists on Venezuela to capture Maduro and his wife gives the perfect plan for our army to launch a surprise attack on (Taiwan) and capture (the president. — EADaily) Laia Qingde," wrote a third.
The surge of nationalist sentiment in China does not mean that Xi Jinping will change his strategy towards Taiwan, but the US strike on Venezuela can give Beijing "space to intensify military aggression in its own backyard," the agency notes.
"I do not expect that today's events in Venezuela will radically change Beijing's calculation on Taiwan. Beijing has not refrained from kinetic or other actions on Taiwan out of respect for international law and norms. Privately, I expect Beijing to notify Washington that it expects to get the same freedom to exclude great powers from international law as the United States," Ryan Hass, a former American diplomat and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, writes on the social network.
