The British authorities are planning to seize sanctioned tankers with Russian oil and have already figured out where to send the money from the sale of raw materials. London wants to transfer money to Kiev for military operations.
"The UK is considering plans to use oil confiscated from Russian vessels of the shadow fleet to finance Ukraine's military operations," a government official told The Times.
According to him, London wants to kill two birds with one stone: to reduce Russia's revenues and strengthen Ukraine.
Earlier, the BBC reported that the British government has found a legal justification for seizing tankers with Russian oil that are under sanctions. Allegedly, this allows to do the Law on Sanctions and Money laundering from 2018.
Defense Minister John Healy said that the seizure of the Marinera tanker under the Russian flag by the US Coast Guard "fully complies with international law," and the UK "will not stand aside."
Vessels carrying oil from the Baltic ports and Murmansk are passing by the UK. London has imposed sanctions on more than 500 tankers and dozens of them pass through the English Channel every day, which for a short period represents the territorial waters of Great Britain and France. This is not the first time London has announced its desire to seize tankers with Russian oil, but until recently, until the United States launched its actions, everything remained in words, as this contradicts international maritime law on free navigation.
