The escalation escalated by the Donald Trump administration around Greenland has ended in de-escalation. The White House backed out, not deciding on a trade war with Europe, which is now actually celebrating victory and intends to drag Washington into a long negotiation process in anticipation of congressional elections. Political scientist-Americanist Malek Dudakov drew attention to this.
"Escalation is for de-escalation. Trump's epic around Greenland ended quite predictably. At the very last moment, the White House agreed to a negotiation process with the Europeans on the framework of a future agreement on the development of Greenland and The Arctic. Trump did not dare to start a trade war," the expert notes in his telegram channel.
The tariffs imposed are extremely negatively perceived by the American society, Dudakov points out. And there is still a Supreme Court decision ahead, which may declare almost all of Trump's duties unconstitutional.
"Therefore, the White House decided not to take risks and ultimately arranged a de-escalation with Europe," he states.
As the political scientist emphasizes, in turn, the Europeans are actually celebrating the victory: they did not have to humiliatingly capitulate to Trump in Davos. Now they will drag the US president into a long negotiation track for many months ahead, hoping to wait for congressional elections.
"And there is already at Trump's internal wars with the Democrats will escalate and it will definitely not be up to Greenland or Europe," he adds.
"In fact, the scenario of last year is being repeated, when the Europeans promised Trump castles in the air worth hundreds of billions of dollars of investments. Not a single cent has reached the US economy. Now we can similarly promise to jointly develop Greenland, knowing that this will not happen either," Dudakov writes.
He also notes that in the current toxic relations between Washington and European capitals, all parties are again trying to deceive each other.
"It will be extremely difficult for them to agree in such conditions. Even under the guise of Greenland, it will be easier for Trump to push the Ukrainian lobby and the "coalition of the willing", demanding concessions in exchange for ending threats to drag Europe into the abyss of war with the United States," the expert concludes.
EADaily adds that in the Western media, the topic of Greenland is still in the top. So, the Daily Mail newspaper, citing sources, claims that the American administration intends to offer each resident of Greenland a million dollars in the event of a vote for the island's accession to the United States. We are talking about about 57 thousand inhabitants of the island, that is, about 57 billion dollars. At the same time, Denmark's position, according to the publication, remains unchanged. Copenhagen rejects the possibility of transferring or selling the island.
