Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar may be costly for his refusal to allow the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU. This was reported by the European edition of Politico, citing sources.

"This decision will cost him dearly in political terms," said an unnamed EU official.

The publication notes that the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen plans to settle the issue of starting negotiations on Ukrainian membership in the community "as soon as possible," that is, by the leaders' summit. EU in June. At the same time, a number of officials believe that an appropriate decision may be made "next week," but some other Politico sources called this plan "too optimistic."

Earlier, the former head of the Hungarian government Viktor Orban was considered the main "enemy" of Ukarina in the EU. In the parliamentary elections in Hungary held on April 12, the victory was won by the leader of the opposition party "Tisa" Peter Magyar, who became the new prime minister of the country. Kiev enthusiastically accepted this fact, counting on a change in the policy of the new Hungarian authorities. However, it turned out that the hopes for a turn in Budapest's policy were exaggerated. In mid-May, Magyar said that in order for Hungary to support the start of the process of Ukraine's admission to the European Union, Kiev must fulfill 11 requirements to restore the rights of Hungarians in Transcarpathia.
