The introduction of new customs duties by the United States was an "unpleasant surprise" for the EU. This was stated by the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas.

"We had a deal with America, and we stuck to that deal... for us, the non—compliance with these agreements came as an unpleasant surprise," she said.

In addition, Callas pointed out the unreasonableness of the new restrictions. According to her, the European labor legislation is better than the American one, in the countries of the community "there is a paid vacation, there are very good working conditions."

Earlier, the United States decided to impose customs duties on trading partners under the pretext of combating forced labor. Their size will range from 10% to 12.5%. Restrictive measures will be extended to 60 countries, including the states of the European Union. The new tariffs will actually replace temporary global duties on imports to the United States, which entered into force on February 24 for a period of 150 days. The duties came into force at 00:01 on July 24, US East Coast time (07:01 Moscow time).
