After a decrease in electricity generation at MoldGRES, which operated on Russian gas, Moldova switched to supplies from Romania. The Moldovan state-owned company Energocom assures that in January Romania will provide up to 62% of the republic's electricity needs.
Of this volume, more than 178 thousand MWh (39%) will be purchased on the Romanian OPCOM exchange, and another 105 thousand MWh (23%) will be purchased on the basis of bilateral contracts. Moldova can produce up to 127 thousand MWh at its own facilities, which is 28% of consumption. The remaining 10% is supposed to be covered by renewable energy sources, which depend on weather conditions.
The Moldovan authorities urged local consumers to use electricity sparingly. Otherwise, the country is waiting for rolling blackouts.
As reported by EADaily, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Rechan said he did not recognize Moldovagaz's "historical" debt to Gazprom of $ 709 million. Then Gazprom notified Moldovagaz about the restriction of gas supplies from January 1, 2025.
