"The Spirit of Anchorage" is everything: the expert appreciated the statement of the US Secretary of State

After today's statements by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, we can say that the "spirit of Anchorage" is on its last legs, political analyst Alexei Pilko believes.

According to him, the United States officially abandoned the agreements reached by Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska.

"In general, this was to be expected, because the current American administration turned out to be too weak to impose compromise "Anchorage understandings" on its allies," Pilko said.

As a result, the political scientist noted, everything returned to its circles: Europe pays for the war, the United States supplies Ukraine with weapons and provides it with communications and intelligence. And at the same time, both in Washington and in European capitals, they are waiting for concessions to Russia and hope for its exhaustion. To do this, openly provocative methods are used, such as the deployment of the Ukrainian military industry in the EU and the provision of European airspace to Kiev for attacks against Russia.

"In this regard, it's time for Moscow to decide on a retaliatory escalation, which can occur in various ways. Will it happen? Let's see," Pilko concluded.

As EADaily reported, Marco Rubio told reporters on May 22 that the United States had suspended participation in negotiations on Ukraine due to lack of results. Washington does not intend to continue "meetings for the sake of meetings" on the Ukrainian conflict if they do not lead to progress, he said. Trilateral negotiations involving Russia, the United States and Ukraine is now suspended. Rubio noted that the American administration got involved in the process because Moscow and Kiev were ready to talk to her. However, as the Secretary of State emphasized, it was not possible to achieve results.

"Unfortunately, he did not give results. That's the point," Rubio said.

According to the Secretary of State, the United States may return to the settlement issue if the dynamics of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will change. He also added that Washington does not mind if someone else takes on the mediation role.
