Lavrov defends the "spirit of Anchorage" in front of Rubio: How was there no agreement?

Statements by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that there was no agreement between the presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska on the settlement of the Ukraine is being questioned, it is "not very elegant" to talk about it from the American side. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"When my colleague Marco Rubio says that there were only proposals in Alaska, but there was no agreement, it raises a question for me in terms of what we mean by an agreement. If one side, in this case the United States, has put on the table its proposals for a settlement, on how to approach this crisis, and the other side has expressed agreement with these proposals, then to say that there was no agreement is somehow not very elegant," the minister's comment says.

According to Lavrov, "in Anchorage, when the two presidents "sat down for talks," Russian President Vladimir Putin, looking at Steve Witkoff, who was also there, began listing American proposals point by point." After each item, in the presence of Trump and Rubio, he asked Witkoff "whether he correctly marked the ideas that he brought to Moscow on the eve of Anchorage."

Lavrov also drew attention to Rubio's words that the United States "is ready to take a step forward and play a constructive role [in resolving Ukraine] if they have the opportunity."

"They say, to unite the parties and put an end to this war is what US President Donald Trump has been trying to do for a year and a half," the Russian Foreign Minister said.
"Everything, probably, can be "read off" as a confirmation that there were American proposals in Alaska that we accepted. But the quote I just announced raises the question from a different point of view. I am referring to Secretary of State Rubio's recent speech at congressional hearings, when he said that the United States cannot be a mediator because they support Ukraine. When now there is an interest in the United States playing a constructive role, uniting the parties, it already sounds like an application for mediation," Lavrov said.

He offered to "clarify this whole situation."

"But the fact remains that US proposals were discussed in Alaska, which were accepted by the Russian side," the minister concluded.

As EADaily reported, Marco Rubio said the day before that "there was no agreement in Alaska, there was a proposal." According to him, if an agreement had been reached in Anchorage, the war on Ukraine would have ended.

On June 23, Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with members of the government, named four bases for negotiations with Kiev: the Istanbul agreements, the "Anchorage modalities," the realities on earth, as well as the principles that the president outlined in a speech delivered at the Foreign Ministry two years ago.
