Former Scientific Director of the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences (INION RAS), Academician Yuri Pivovarov sentenced in absentia to seven years in a general regime colony and a fine of 750 thousand rubles. This decision was made by the Gagarin Court of Moscow, RIA Novosti reports today, June 28.

The criminal case was initiated on the fact of the fictitious arrangement of employees and the appropriation of funds allocated to the institute for the conclusion of contracts with contractors for the performance of a number of works.

"According to the totality of crimes, by partially adding the main and additional punishments, finally appoint Pivovarov Yuri Sergeevich punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of seven years with serving a sentence in a correctional colony of general regime with a fine of 750,000 rubles, with deprivation of the right to hold positions in the state in the service and in local self-government bodies related to the performance of organizational and administrative and administrative functions for a period of three years," the materials say.

The actions of the academician caused damage on a particularly large scale. The Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation introduced Pivovarov, who fled abroad back in 2022 and was put on the wanted list in the register of foreign agents on May 23, 2025. The exact country of residence has not been disclosed, it is only known that he participates in the activities of the so-called "Anti-War Committee of Russia".
