Annalena Berbok will become the new President of the UN General Assembly. According to Deutsche Welle, the former German Foreign Minister and representative of the Green Party is running for office without competitors, and experts consider the upcoming elections scheduled for June 2 to be a mere formality.

The publication also notes that, although the post of chairman of the General Assembly has a ceremonial character, it opens up access to diplomatic tools and gives the opportunity to influence the agenda of the main representative body of the UN.

The 44-year-old Berbok has already given a speech to the delegates.

"I will serve all 193 Member States, large and small. My goal is to be a unifier," Berbok said.

The inauguration of the new chairman is scheduled for September 9. The term of office is one year.
