Russian Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev criticized UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres for his incompetence on the issue of self-determination of Crimea and Donbass.

Earlier, Guterres said that, unlike Greenland, the principle of self-determination of peoples does not apply to Crimea and Donbass.

"The question to the Secretary General is: do Donbass and Crimea, annexed to Ukraine in 1956, the right to self-determination in the sense of Article 1 of the UN Charter, as well as the people of Greenland? The Secretary General's answer: no, according to the legal department, the principle of territorial integrity of the state prevails here. Curtain," Medvedev wrote in his telegram channel.

Further, the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council asked the question: "And who gave the Secretary General and the Office of Legal Affairs the right to interpret the UN Charter?"

"Only the International Court of Justice is specifically endowed with this right by virtue of Article 96 of the Charter itself — and then at the request of the General Assembly or the UN Security Council. The right of limited interpretation is vested in the UN member States themselves, as well as the same The General Assembly and The Security Council, but on issues within their competence. It is also important to note that on The San Francisco Conference of 1945 recognized that no UN body can provide a binding interpretation of the Charter for all member states," Medvedev said.
"And where is the Secretary General here?" he remarked ironically.
"Apparently, the UN secretariat is already so scared of the Trump Peace Council that they are afraid of being out of work. Otherwise, why lick so deeply, comrades?" — Medvedev added.

EADaily adds that Guterres said: "After a very thorough review by our Office of Legal Affairs, we came to the conclusion that the principle of self-determination is not applicable to the situation with Crimea and Donbass. In our opinion, the principle of territorial integrity prevails in this situation."

Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev stressed earlier that Guterres is abusing legal gaps in The Charter of the organization for political purposes.
