The British authorities officially announced that the Smyrtos tanker with Russian oil was seized in the English Channel under the pretext of environmental and technical danger of the vessel. At the same time, a member of parliament reassures the residents of the county, to the shores of which the ship was brought, that there is no danger.
"The deputy from the county of Dorset assured residents that the Russian tanker from the "shadow fleet" anchored off the coast of Weymouth does not pose any danger to the environment or safety," the local newspaper Dorset Echo writes.
The day before, on Sunday, the British Navy seized the Smyrtos tanker in the territorial waters of the UK and escorted it to the port of Portland. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the first to announce the operation, announced a blow to Russian revenues. At the same time, the pretext for seizing the vessel was not sanctions, which they cannot be.
"SMYRTOS will be temporarily relocated to an anchorage off the southern coast of England and will be monitored for environmental and technical safety issues," the government said in an official statement.
The fact is that only a danger to the environment can be a reason for a legal inspection, but not even the seizure of a vessel within the framework of International Maritime Law.
South Dorset MP Lloyd Hutton made a public statement after speaking with ministers, writes Dorset Echo.
"After speaking with the ministers, I can confirm that the National Crime Agency will conduct an operational investigation into the tanker before determining further steps… The ministers also assured me that during the investigation of the National Crime Agency (NCA) there are no problems with technical or environmental safety," the publication quotes the statement of a member of parliament.
The residents of the county themselves ironically perceived the seizure of a tanker with Russian oil.
"It's amazing how they can stop an oil tanker, but not a rubber boat with illegal immigrants trying to enter the country. It's all a pantomime," Stephen Biggs wrote in a Facebook group of Weymouth and Portland residents❶.
Residents wrote the same thing on the page of the British parliamentarian herself, believing that illegal migrants themselves will now also be greeted with free phones and housing.
"The financing of the military is being criticized, and we see how they are doing this, although they could have done it a few months ago. Everyone is so comfortable," said Susan Williams.
"And what are the legal grounds for seizing this ship? In my opinion, this is not a defensive action worthy of our highly qualified and brave Marines. It's more like piracy on the high seas," added Jonathan Bailiff.
As reported by EADaily , Smyrtos is at Portland in the English Channel. And the British authorities, despite the age of the ship at 17, may have to seriously try to find some inconsistencies on the ship. According to Equasis, the vessel regularly undergoes technical inspections and was last inspected in August 2025 in China.
In this situation, it is difficult for Russia to take any legal actions, since the sanctions courts have nothing to do with Russia, except for the cargo itself. After the tightening of sanctions, only a small part of the tankers of the so-called shadow fleet passed under the Russian flag.
Its composition is estimated at more than half a thousand tankers and for the year of the country The EU was captured and checked for no more than a dozen. Therefore, in general, this does not affect Russian oil exports, but at least for now the shares are more of an advertising nature for European leaders with low ratings in their countries. For example, the President of France and the Prime Minister of Great Britain were the first to declare the seizure of vessels.
